How To Format a USB Disk for Mac & PC

How to format a USB flash or hard disk on a Mac, for use in a Mac and PC environment.

In this quick demo, How To Format a USB Disk for Use on Mac & PC.

Basically, to format a USB flash or hard disk, on a Mac, for use in a Mac and PC environment, like at home, work, school or college, and, in order to read and copy files to it, the USB disk has to be formatted correctly.

Straight to the demo.

Soooooooo, Let's Get Started.

Before starting, make sure to backup all your files on your existing USB disk, as all data will be erased when creating a cross-platform USB disk.

Okay, once that's taken care of, it's time to proceed.

Open Disk Utility from Spotlight by beginning typing Disk Utility,  then simply, click on or press the enter key, on the Disk Utility icon to launch.

Now insert the USB disk in an available USB socket.

You should notice the icon for the USB disk appears on the desktop and on the left pane of the Disk Utility window.

Now, from the Disk Utility window, click on the inserted USB disk, shown here.

Next, click on the Erase tab  here, and from the dropdown list of Format, select MS-Dos (FAT) and type a name for your USB disk.

I’ll just name mine: MAC&PC USB1

After entering a name, click on the Erase button here, to continue.

From the pop-up window, confirm that you wish to continue by clicking the Erase button.

And, in my case, after a few seconds, the USB disk is created and named accordingly, as shown.

And that’s all there is to it. You now have a USB disk formatted for use on a Mac and PC.
