In this quick episode, How To Use Picture in Picture on YouTube in macOS Sierra.

Sooooo Let’s Get Started.

Briefly, a cool feature in macOS Sierra, is the ability to use Picture in Picture, commonly known as PiP, on any video player that shows the following symbol.

Simply clicking on the symbol, activates Picture in Picture.

A PiP window can be resized, repositioned to any corner and works great in full screen, on top of your other content.

However, when it comes to YouTube videos, no PiP symbol is shown on it’s video player.

Therefore, to activate Picture in Picture on a YouTube video player, is a simple process.

With the mouse-pointer on the video, either hold down the ctrl-button on your keyboard and click twice on your mouse or right-click twice on your mouse, and choose “Enter Picture-in-Picture”.

And that’s all there is to it.

In this episode, How To Enable Hands-Free "Hey Siri" command on macOS Sierra.

Straight to a demo. Sooooo Let’s Get Started.

Let’s take care of some basic stuff.

Firstly, it should be noted that in previous versions of OS X, Dictation & Speech had it’s own dedicated Icon. In macOS Sierra, Dictation has moved to a Tab button in Keyboard and Speech has moved to an option in Accessibility, has shown.

Secondly, make sure that Siri is enabled, by launching System Preferences and click the Siri icon and check the box shown here.

Lastly, and optionally, enable “Use ambient noise reduction” for your mic, by clicking on the Sound icon, then the Input Tab, as shown here. Basically this cuts down on background noise, which I found useful when using Siri.

Continuing on, to enable hands-free Siri, we first need to enable Dictation, click on the Keyboard icon and then click the Dictation Tab, then turn On Dictation and also check the box to Use Enhanced Dictation, which will basically download a 1.2 Gig file for offline use.

Next, while still in System Preferences, click the Accessibility icon and select Dictation.

Optionally check the box here to play a sound when command is recognized.

Now type the command that you would like to use to enable Dictation, some example are Hi, Hey and Yo, basically anything you like. I’ll use “Yo”

Next, to activate Siri, click the Dictation Commands button shown here.

Now, click the box shown here to Enable advanced commands.

Next, click the plus button shown here and where it shows “When I say”, enter a command to activate Siri, like, Dude, Siri and Mac. I’ll choose Mac.

Leave “While Using”, to it’s default of Any Application.

For “Perform”, click on the dropdown list and choose “Open Finder Items…” and navigate to the Applications Folder and select Siri.

Finally, click on the Done button.

You can now close the Accessibility window, and simply say “Yo Mac” to activate hands-free Siri.

And that’s all there is to it.

How To Change The Default Save Location on Mac When Issuing Screenshot Keyboard Shortcut Commands.

In this episode, How To Change Screenshot Location on Mac.

By default, when issuing the keyboard shortcuts for full screen screenshot shift+cmd+3 or sectional screenshot shift+cmd+4, the default save location, is on the Desktop.

After a while, your Desktop can become quite messy.

An alternative would be, to have all screenshots saved in a Folder, anywhere you like on a Mac or even on an external disk, when issuing the Screenshot keyboard commands.

This can be accomplished by entering two simple one line commands in Terminal:

Sooooo Let’s Get Started

Let’s first create a Folder, where you’ll like all screenshots to be saved, when issuing the Screenshot keyboard commands, I’ll create one on an external disk named “Screenshot Lib”.

Next, open Terminal and enter the following Two line commands, in the following format:

Line 1:
defaults write com.apple.screencapture location /path of Folder for Screenshots

Line2:
killall SystemUIServer

Therefore, for Line 1:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture location followed by a space.

The easiest way to enter the path is by simply dragging the Folder just created on the external disk to line one in Terminal as follows, followed by carriage return.

Followed by  line 2:

killall SystemUIServer followed by carriage return.

All Terminal commands used in this episode can be found in the description of this video below.

Now, as you can see, whenever executing the following keyboard shortcut shift+cmd+3 or shift+cmd+4, the screenshots are saved in the new default screenshot folder on the external disk.

To revert back to the Default screenshot location, simply enter the following two, one line commands in Terminal:

Line 1:
defaults write com.apple.screencapture location /Users/Username/Desktop
Replace Username with that of yours, in my case, it’s MacStudioA

Line 2:
killall SystemUIServer

And that’s all there is to it.

In this episode, How To Turn Your Mac into a WiFi Hotspot.

For what ever reasons, you might want to turn your Mac into a WiFi Hotspot. In order to do so, your Mac has to be connected to a wired ethernet connection.

An example where I’ve found this useful, is when the hotel room that I’m staying in, is equipped with an ethernet port, and as I always travel with a mini ethernet cable, I’m able to setup a WiFi hotspot on my Mac for my devices, like my iPhone and iPad.

Soooooo, Let's Get Started.

Once an ethernet connection has been established for your Mac, creating a WiFi hotspot, is a relatively easy process.

Simply open System Preferences and click on the Sharing icon.

Now, if you’re logged in as a Standard user, click on the padlock, where you’ll need to enter your Admin user name and password to proceed. Alternatively if logged in as an Admin user, no padlock will be visible.

Next, click on the Internet Sharing  option, shown here. Then click on Wi-Fi.

Now click on the Wi-Fi Options… button to configure your WiFi hotspot.

By default, the Network Name, also known as your SSID, uses your Mac Computer Name, which you can change at anytime. I’ll change mine to MacStudioA Hotspot.

Leave Channel number to whatever is shown in your case and then click on the Security dropdown list and select WPA2 Personal, and enter a Password that you’ll need to enter when connecting your devices.

Once you’ve finished configuring your WiFi hotspot, click on the OK button to confirm.

You’ll then be presented with a dropdown dialogue box to turn on Internet Sharing. Click the Start button to activate your WiFi hotspot.

Now simply connect your devices to your WiFi Hotspot.

Anytime you want to turn off the WiFi hotspot, simply open System Preferences and uncheck Internet Sharing.

And that’s all there is to it.

As you’ve probably noticed, Tags does not have a keyboard shortcut.

Assigning a keyboard shortcut for Tags in OS X is a relatively easy process.

Soooooo, Let's Get Started.

To assign a keyboard shortcut for Tags, simply open System Preferences and click on the Keyboard icon.

Then click on the Shortcuts tab.

Next, click on the App Shortcuts option and then the plus button, shown here.

Now, from the pop-up dialogue window, click on the pop-up menu for Application and select Finder.

Then, for Menu Title:, enter the exact name of the menu command you want to add, which in our case is "Tags…" followed by three periods or press Option-semi-colon for the ellipsis.

Finally, enter a keyboard shortcut for the Tags option, I'll enter Option-cmd-T, then click on the Add button.

And that’s all there is to it, anytime you want to add Tags to Files and Folders, simply press Option-cmd-T.

In this quick episode, How To Change The Login Wallpaper in OS X El Capitan.

Changing the Login wallpaper in El Capitan is a relatively easy process.

Soooooo, Let's Get Started.

The first thing we need to do, is to make sure that the wallpaper that you’ll be using is in the PNG format with the following filename: com.apple.desktop.admin.

Therefore, since the wallpaper that I’ll be using is in the JPG format, I’ll just open it in Preview and export it in the PNG format and named com.apple.desktop.admin.

Next, make sure that the PNG extension for the login wallpaper is visible and that the wallpaper is Locked. Locking the login wallpaper, prevents it from changing anytime the Desktop wallpaper is changed.

To do that, simply right-click or ctrl-click on the login wallpaper and select Get Info. Then uncheck Hide extension and select Locked, as shown here.

Once that’s taken care of, click on Go from the menubar of Finder and then click the Go to Folder… option and enter the following path: /Library/Caches

Next, backup the current wallpaper named com.apple.desktop.admin in the Caches Folder, by simply renaming it.

Finally, simply drag and drop the login wallpaper prepared earlier on the Desktop to the Caches Folder.

Now, anytime you login or out, you’re presented with your vey own custom login wallpaper.

And that’s all there is to it.

We’ve already shown on the previous episode, how to install and run macOS Sierra on an external SSD.

We’re now going to create an additional partition on the external SSD, in order to dual boot macOS Sierra and El Capitan.

Soooooo, Let's Get Started.

As usual, since we'll be using Disk Utility, make sure you have or made a backup of your system hard drive or drives before proceeding.

Continuing on, after inserting the SSD in an available USB socket, open Disk Utility.

Now, click on the SSD header in the sidebar, then click the Partition button shown here.

To create an additional partition, click the plus sign button shown here and then name the  Partition to whatever you like and make sure that the default format is OS X Extended (Journaled), alternatively, to delete the partition simply click the minus button.

Once satisfied with your choice, click the Apply button to create the new partition.

Now, close Disk Utility and simply launch the macOS El Capitan installer and choose to install on the newly created partition, which, in my case,  is named macOS El Capitan SSD.

The remaining installation process, is exactly the same, as was shown in the previous episode.

In summary, after the installation process has finished, El Capitan boots to the Desktop, where, you can optionally set the default startup disk, to that of your Mac system drive after turning on your Mac

Once that’s taken care of, anytime you want to run macOS Sierra or El Capitan from the SSD, simply shutdown the Mac and proceed with the power and Option key combination, to boot to the Startup Manager and click the macOS, on the SSD, that you want to boot to.

And that’s all there is to it.

In this episode, I’ll be demonstrating, how to install and run macOS Sierra on an external USB 3.0 SSD drive, using the new Disk Utility in OS X El Capitan.

Soooooo, Let's Get Started.

What you will need:

An Intel Based Mac System.

Downloaded copy of macOS Sierra Installer.

And finally, a fast USB 3.0 Flash or External SSD Drive.

As usual, since we'll be using Disk Utility, make sure you have or made a backup of your system hard drive or drives before proceeding, can't say you’ve not been warned.

Now, with all the basic necessities taken care of, the first thing we'll need to do after inserting the SSD drive in an available USB 3.0 socket, is to open Disk Utility and partition the SSD Drive.

Therefore, after opening Disk Utility, click on the SSD drive in the sidebar, then click the Partition button shown here.

Now, name your Partition to whatever you like and make sure that the format is OS X Extended (Journaled).

Then click the Apply button to format and partition the SSD drive.

After formatting and partitioning the SSD drive, you can close Disk Utility and simply launch the macOS Sierra installer and choose to install Sierra on the SSD drive just formatted and partitioned, as shown here.

I’ll just time lapse the installation process from here, which took about 14 minutes to complete, to point where you begin to select your location.

Once the required login details have been entered, you are brought to the Sierra desktop.

At this point, it’s advisable to change the startup disk order from the SSD drive to your default start up drive of your Mac, which in my case is the Macintosh HD as shown here.

Once that’s taken care of, I’ll just shutdown the Mac and proceed with the power and option key combination to boot to the Startup Manager and click the SSD drive to launch macOS Sierra as shown.

And that’s all there is to it.

In this episode, How To Create a macOS Sierra 10.12 Developer Preview USB Boot Disk.

Straight to the Demo. Soooooooo, Let’s Get Started.

Let’s First Begin With The Prep Work:

1. You’re logged in with an Admin account on your Mac.

2. You have at least an 8 GB blank USB 2.0 or 3.0 Disk.

3. Have a copy of macOS Sierra 10.12 Developer Preview Installer and that it’s located in the Applications folder.

macOS 10.12 Developer Preview Beta, is available for download from Apple’s Developer Program by buying an annual membership.

A free Public Beta Preview will be available for download via. Apple’s Public Beta Program in July.

And when officially released this fall, macOS 10.12, will available from the Mac App Store as a free download.

4. Open TextEdit and make document as plain text.

5. Copy and paste the following one line Terminal command, which I’ve included in the description of this video, in the text document:

sudo /Applications/Install\ 10.12\ Developer\ Preview.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/NameOfUSBDisk --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ 10.12\ Developer\ Preview.app --nointeraction

Now, with all the prep work taken care of, let’s begin creating the USB Boot Disk.

Insert your USB Disk in an available socket and note the name. In my case, the name of the USB is “USB1”.

From the text document created earlier, replace “NameOfUSBDisk” with the name of your USB Disk.

Final Steps: Open Terminal and copy and paste the one line Terminal command from the text document, followed by carriage return.

You’ll then be asked to enter your Admin Password and after pressing carriage return, the creation of the macOS 10.12 USB Boot Disk Installer will begin.

I’ll just time-lapse it from here.

In My Case: Using a USB 3.0 disk, it only took just under 2 minutes to complete. And for a USB 2.0 disk, it took just over 30 minutes to complete.

And that’s all there is to it.

In this episode, How To Clean Install OS X El Capitan Using Disk Utility.

We’ve already shown How To Create a USB Boot Disk Using OS X El Capitan from the previous episode https://youtu.be/prLb00eRA0Y.

Before proceeding with the steps involved in doing a clean install of OS X El Capitan, it should be noted that your system hard drive, in most cases, know as your Macintosh HD, will be erased.

Therefore, it’s very important that you’ve done or already have a backup of your important files.

Furthermore, where appropriate, I’ve time-lapse some of the procedures.

Straight to the Demo.

Soooooooo, Let’s Get Started.

Shut down your Mac and insert your El Capitan boot disk in an available socket.


Now, press and hold down the Option key Immediately after you turn on your Mac and hear the startup sound.

Keep holding the Option key till the Startup Manager appears.

Next, Double-click on the Install OS X El Capitan icon or click on the icon and click the up-arrow symbol, where you’ll then see a desktop with an OS X menu bar.

Now, you’ll either see an OS X El Capitan splash screen or an OS X Utilities window as shown.

If you saw the OS X Utilities window, double-click Disk Utility and if you saw the OS X El Capitan Splash screen, click Utilities from the menu bar and select Disk Utility…

From the Disk Utility window, select Macintosh HD, then the Erase Button, shown here.

Make sure the Format is as shown, Mac OS Extended (journaled) and the default Name Macintosh HD (you can change the name if you wish)

Then press the Erase Button here. This will Erase all data and reformat the current Macintosh disk, this takes about 10 seconds.

After Erasing the Macintosh HD, quick Disk Utility.

You’re now back to either the OS X El Capitan splash screen or the OS X Utilities window as before.

It’s now time to Install OS X El Capitan.

Just click the Continue Button from the splash screen or double-click Install OS X from the OS X Utilities window.

After agreeing to the terms, select the Macintosh HD that was just Erased and finally, click on the Continue or the Install Button.

I’ll just time-lapse the remaining process from here.

In my case, the Installation took about 25 minutes, where the Mac will auto boot, and you’ll be presented with the screen to setup your Mac.

After entering the necessary details, you’ll be presented with the El Capitan Desktop.

And that’s all there is to it.

In this episode, How To Create a USB Boot Disk Installer Using OS X El Capitan.

Straight to the Demo. Soooooooo, Let’s Get Started.

Let’s First Begin With The Prep Work:

1. You’re currently running OS X El Capitan and that you’re logged in with an Admin Account.

2. You have at least an 8 GB blank USB 2.0 or 3.0 Disk.

3. Have a copy of OS X El Capitan Installer and that it’s located in the Applications folder.

If you don’t have OS X El Capitan Installer, then download a copy from the App Store. After clicking on Download, you’ll get a message saying that El Capitan is already installed, do you still want to download it, click continue to download a copy of El Capitan Installer.

After the download is complete, a splash screen will appear to install El Capitan, simply quit the installer as shown here.

4. Open TextEdit and make document as plain text.

5. Copy and paste the following one line Terminal command, which I’ve included in the description of this video, in the text document:

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/NameOfUSBDisk --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app --nointeraction

Now, with all the prep work taken care of, let’s begin creating the USB Boot Disk.

Insert your USB Disk in an available socket and note the name. In my case, the name of the USB is “USB1”.
