Using the Handoff Feature in iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite

How To Use The Handoff Feature in iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite. Handoff, one of the Continuity Features in OS X Yosemite and iOS 8, allows you to pick-off  where you left off, from one device to another.

In this episode, Using The Handoff Feature in iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite.

Basically; the Handoff feature, allows you to pick-up where you left off, from one device to another.

For example, if you are working on a Keynote presentation on, say, your iPhone, and you’re in close proximity of your Mac, you are able to pick-up where you left off on the Mac or vice versa.

At present, there’s only a handful of apps, that supports the Handoff feature. The native installed apps in iOS 8 and Yosemite, as shown here, and, some paid and third-party apps.

Now for a demo on configuring and working with the Handoff feature, on an iPhone and a Mac.

Sooooo, Let’s Get Started.

The first thing to do, is to make sure all devices that you wish to use Handoff, is configured correctly.

Let’s first start with the iPhone.

Launch Settings and check that the settings for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the Handoff feature, is turned On, as shown here.

If not already ON, turn On and select your Wi-Fi network.

Next, turn Bluetooth On, no need for any pairing.

Finally, check if the Handoff feature is turned On. Tap on General and select Handoff & Suggested Apps, turn ON Handoff, if not already selected. As shown here.

That takes care of the settings for the iPhone, we now need to check that the Mac is configured correctly.

Click the Wi-Fi menulet icon, on the menu bar, and, turn On Wi-Fi, making sure to select the same Wi-Fi network, as chosen earlier, for the iPhone.

Next, Launch System Preferences, click the Bluetooth icon and make sure that Bluetooth is also turned On and again, no pairing necessary.

Finally; while still in System Preferences, check that the Handoff feature is also turned On.

Click on the General icon, and, if not already checked, place a check mark, to activate the Handoff feature.

Once all necessary Handoff configurations has been made on the iPhone and Mac, working with Handoff, is simple.

For example, using Notes on the Mac, you can continue where you left off on the iPhone, in one of two ways:

Either, double tap the Home button, to access the multitask app switcher screen, then swipe to the right and tap on the Notes icon.

Or, from the Lock screen, you should notice the Notes icon, in the bottom left corner of the screen, swipe up, and, after logging in, you will brought to where you left off.

Similarly, after selecting a Keynote project on the iPhone, to the left of the Dock, on the Mac, the Handoff Keynote icon will pop-up.

Now, continue where you left off in Keynote, by either clicking on the icon or use the keyboard shortcut, Command-Tab, as shown.

And that’s all there is to it.
